Hanna Travel Guide
Welcome to Hanna!
Situated in southeastern Alberta, approximately 77 km (48 mi) from Drumheller, the town of Hanna has always been a junction of sorts. Historically, it was a hub for the railroad following its formation in 1912 as a divisional point on the Great Northern Railway. In fact, the town is home to Canada's only functioning turntable—a circular revolving platform used to turn trains around—as well as a roundhouse that housed locomotives during repairs. History buffs can witness its rail and homesteading background at the Pioneer Village and Museum, located on the Pioneer Trail in town. Featuring a full block of historic buildings, steam engines and turn-of-the-century artifacts, visitors can literally walk through the town's past.Bird watchers, on the other hand, can find interest in Hanna's
skies, for it is the wide blue space above the town that serves as a major junction
today. The region is a staging point and migration route of four types
of geese—Canada, White-fronted, Snow and Ross—and every autumn, thousands
of large birds descend on the area. Not surprisingly, bird and game hunting
are also popular activities every fall.
